Throughout our childhood, cooking and entertaining were at the heart of our household, which inspired us to study at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Following school, we interned at the renowned La Varenne in Joigny, France, and returned to the states to work in some of the nation’s most celebrated restaurants, including New York’s Quilted Giraffe and San Francisco’s Aqua. In 1994, we launched Thymes Two Catering, which we owned and operated for six years in San Francisco.
As our families began to grow, we transitioned into food writing. This allowed us to stay connected to our love for cooking while having more time for our children. Over the years, our recipes were featured in Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, American Home Style, Fine Cooking, Pottery Barn, Cooking Light, Victoria, and Health magazines.
Eventually, we co-authored 8 books and sold over a million copies. Our most well-known and comprehensive book is Bride & Groom First and Forever Cookbook. Our other single subject titles include Smoothies, Wraps, Simplify Entertaining, Cocktail Food, Super Smoothies, Skewer It!, & Super-Charged Smoothies. We were featured as guests on the NBC’s Today Show, Live with Regis, San Francisco’s Bay Café, Napa Style with Michael Chiarello, and the Food Network’s Cooking Live Primetime with Sara Moulton.
While we are passionate about cooking, we also are dedicated wives and moms, spending much of your time raising our five kids, ranging in ages from 10 to 19. (Mary has three boys and Sara has two girls.) They are our pride and joy!
We have many passions outside of the kitchen, including yoga, hiking, gardening, flower arranging, and entertaining. Farmer’s markets always delight us and we relish the opportunity to entertain family and friends.
Over the years, we’ve transferred our affections from fancy, French, butter-laden beurre blancs and béchemels to what we like to call “Cali-fresh, Paleo-inspired” cooking. Our culinary style evolved in part due to our diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s diagnosis. Also, we have had the privilege of working for Dr. Dean Ornish for the past 18 months developing heart healthy recipes for his disease reversal diet. We’ve also collaborated with Dr. Bob Arnot, the author of The Aztec Diet and the Coffee Lover’s Diet.
We strive to create simple, healthy, and user-friendly recipes that increase vitality. the We are gluten-free, dairy free, refined sugar free and every now and again, we’ll throw in some oatmeal or some quinoa, or we’ll make a pot of heirloom beans for our families.
We have learned along the way to eat foods that make our bodies feel optimum. Listening to the way that food makes our bodys’ feel has taught us the value of intuitive eating. Such consciousness around food choices has helped us to heal our guts and lead us to greater vitality, mental clarity and overall better health.
What we love most is SHARING all that we have learned over the years. In a nutshell, it is this: a whole lot of organic whole foods, punctuated by fresh veggies, lean, grass-fed protein, and wild-caught fish—all made with LOVE and intention.
